Why should you start martial arts as an adult?

Are you an adult who is considering joining a martial arts club, but the thought of starting is a leap you’re struggling to make?

There are numerous benefits to starting martial arts as an adult. We could run through a list of typical buzzwords to appease the masses, but I believe there’s more to it than getting AI to write me a list.

We run Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes for adults at PGS, and we’ve seen a massive growth of the club growth in this area. Is it because of the sports? Or is it because of the culture? – we will come on to this later.

Almost everyone whom I have spoken to who has joined the club said that the first session was the most petrifying thing they’ve done in DECADES.

What are the main benefits?

As adults in today’s modern society, we rarely put ourselves in uncomfortable situations, and rightly so – it’s terrifying. However, being able to put yourself in those situations can be a fantastic way to develop yourself. YES, martial arts are great for learning self-defence, YES, they can help build physical qualities. But most importantly, they teach our minds not to fear the unknown. That’s not to say you should feel uncomfortable at a club for years, but that when you do arrive, it slowly becomes less daunting. Which intern teaches us not to be afraid of pushing ourselves.

I believe if I questioned the adults at our club, “What are the benefits you’ve found from starting martial arts?” None of them would say that they have improved in their given grappling martial art. Instead, the answers would angle towards a shared community with a shared goal. Now, what is that goal would be club dependant, and you have to decide whether or not you align with that club’s philosophy.

For us, our club’s goal and focus when we set the club up was to give a space away from work and home where people feel at ease. OF COURSE, we are trying to improve our ability in Judo and BJJ, but we’re doing it in a space where we feel welcome as not only does this make it more enjoyable, but it also helps us retain information better.

What’s important to note is you might not resonate with that, and that’s fine. But look to find a club which you do – then you will truly gain the benefitting factors that martial arts have to offer and all those lists you see. You’ll know very quickly if a club is for you, and if it’s not, don’t feel any pressure to stay, P.S. (DON’T SIGN A 12-MONTH CONTRACT – ITS A SCAM 👁👁).

I’m conscious that I haven’t answered the title of this blog. But I don’t think it needs answering, as what you get from martial arts may be different from person to person. As long as you’re supported and feel safe, that’s all that matters in your journey to find why it’s good for you.
